It would seem as though Taika Waititi’s big screen debut in a galaxy far, far away is on hold indefinitely as reported by Inverse. The unnamed film which has been in ‘development’ since 2020 has ultimately come to a complete halt as Waititi focuses on other projects, including his latest film “Klara and the Sun”.
Waititi, widely known for his contributions for Marvel, has spoken about how he would like to bring back the fun and charm of the original films, hoping to expand upon what fans could expect if the we saw more of the first three films, but stay separate from the original story line.
“The stakes are very high, and there’s serious things going on, but there’s also a lot of fun to be had with those films. That’s what I was trying to bring back – I was trying to work in a world that was a little bit separate to that because they’ve got so many things going on within that space”
Unfortunately for Star Wars fans, they’ll have to wait even longer for Waititi’s movie directorial debut in the franchise. He went onto tell Inverse:
“I hate to break this to you, but we’re going to actually put it on ice and we’re working on a different thing together – I don’t even know how to dress it up or make it even vague, it’s very iced. I’ve got about four other movies I’m trying to do.”
This seemed inevitable given the lack of updates and pointless non-updates over the years which we covered here. Last year, Kathleen Kennedy stated work was continuing with Tony McNamara who replaced Krysty Wilson-Cairns. We have new leadership at Lucasfilm and Disney; Jon Watts has been tasked at the next Star Wars film.
