A big production update on the next instalment of the Star Wars Skywalker Saga has reportedly leaked.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jon Watts has joined onto direct the first of the new trilogy set in a galaxy far, far away. Watts previously co-wrote Star Wars Skeleton Crew which was adored by some fans but struggled to gain any meaningful demand for Disney. He’s best known for directing the first trilogy of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man films.
Rey Skywalker Returns
THR is reporting that this trilogy is designed to be the next part of the Skywalker Saga; Episode 10, 11 and 12. It will follow the events of Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker but it is unknown to what extent and how far in the timeline this trilogy will be set. We also don’t know how or if it will even connect to Star Wars Starfighter which is set a few years after 2019’s Skywalker Saga film.
What we do know is Rey Skywalker played by Daisy Ridley will return in a currently unknown capacity. It sounds like she won’t be the lead and that New Jedi Order film has been shelved.
Nothing Is For Certain
Interestingly, this trilogy of films still has yet to be greenlit by Disney. Even though it has been in deep development for quite some time with it being penned by Simon Kinberg, the mouse house have yet to officially sign off on it. Watts has not signed up to direct all three films but as the situation is influx that could change. This trilogy is by far the most a long in terms of development at Lucasfilm.
The trades reporting this information following what Knight Edge Media previously shared. Up until now their track record has been not the most reliable but evidently they have sources connected to this project at least. This is something to consider ahead of hopefully more leaks and information related to this film in the future.
Where Is Lucasfilm At?
Jon Watts is a safe choice for Lucasfilm and Disney but not a name lots of fans are please to hear. He’s delivered blockbusters for the studio before which have been very successful and Skeleton Crew had some big fans even if it wasn’t the most commercially successful. This is a director who has been within the Disney wheelhouse for a while and another safe bet after a bunch of struggles is what they are seemingly betting on.
This news continues to make the announcements Star Wars Celebration 2023 even more farcical. Lucasfilm brought out three directors to announce three films and over 3 years later none of them have actually gotten past pre-production. Two of them have been shelved whilst another has been put on the back burner based on what we know at least.
That was such a hopeful time for Star Wars fans and it was all for nothing. Whatever we get presented to us at Celebration next year, we can’t take anything at face value until cameras are rolling. We all want Lucasfilm to get back on track and deliver great Star Wars blockbusters for the big screen let’s just hope they have the recipe locked in.
