Star Wars The Mandalorian and Grogu has only been in theatres 2 weeks but Disney have now confirmed a general time frame for when the film will be available to stream from home.
The film had a better than projected opening weekend. However, ticket sales at the box office fell off a cliff in the second weekend. So much so, IMAX began pulling screenings for the film in that format. It will be partially replaced with He-Man masters of the universe from Friday.
Last week, we learned how Disney were claiming to not only take into account the box office figure. Instead, merchandise/toy sales plus Disney Park tickets and Disney+ viewers will also be used to justify the film’s reported $300m (with marketing) budget.
On Thursday, Disney+ Europe, Middle East and Africa General Manager Karl Holmes spoke at the Enders TMT (Technology, Media and Telecom) Leaders Live conference in London. The Hollywood Reporter was able to share what was said by Holmes. The Disney+ executive said that The Mandalorian and Grogu will be among the many new releases coming to Disney+ this year.

“There’s no other streaming service that comes close to the strength and depth of our movie content and our movies come to Disney+ straight after the cinemas. Among new releases coming to Disney+ this year are the likes of Zootopia 2, Avatar: Fire and Ash, Toy Story 5, The Mandalorian & Grogu, and The Devil Wears Prada 2. The importance of releasing our movies in cinema – because success at the box office has an impact that spreads far beyond the theatrical window.”
When exactly it will come to the streaming service will depend on how long its theatrical run ends up being. For example, Holmes noted how Avatar: Fire and Ash will join Disney+ this year too (specifically on June 24th). That film came out all the way back in December last year but had a successful, 6 month long run in theatres. Only in May did it get a streaming date. Given the low takings at the box office, we probably won’t be waiting until December to see Mando and Grogu wherever we watch to watch it.
It will be interesting to see how the Jon Favreau film fairs on Disney+. Hopefully we will get some data well into the future that gives us an insight.
