Both Star Wars Starfighter and the 50th anniversary re-release of Star Wars will be shown in IMAX 70mm.
In a new post on StarWars.com, Lucasfilm and IMAX jointly announced lucky fans will be able to watch these two features in the large screen format.
As we know, the original version of Star Wars from 1977 is being shown in theatres and IMAX for the first time since 1977. This version is restored and remastered in 4K and now as large as 70mm at select IMAX locations. Fans can watch the re-release from February 19th 2027.
Star Wars Starfighter is also getting the same treatment. It was previously revealed some scenes were filmed in IMAX much like all Disney-era Star Wars films as was a traditional IMAX release. Now we know the film is getting a 70mm version at the special locations that can project it worldwide. However, the film was not shot in full IMAX 70mm. According to Deadline it has been converted to the 70mm format. The 1977 version of Star Wars will also likely be upscaled from 35mm to 70mm.
“The “Filmed for Imax” release was shot with Imax-certified cameras and will be converted to Imax 70mm film prints for release in a select number of Imax film locations.”
